I am certifying with DONA International and have been trained for both labor and delivery as well as postpartum. I have always been passionate about women taking an active role in their healthcare and being a doula is the ultimate expression of that passion. I am very comfortable supporting the kind of birth you want and helping you choose what is best for you and your baby. I have many years of experience taking care of newborns as the oldest of a very large family, as a mother and now as a grandmother. I believe a new mother needs to be supported as much as possible during the postpartum period so both she and her baby can thrive. I have a BA in elementary education from the College of William and Mary and a masters in applied communication from Denver University.
As I have grown older, I have gotten more and more interested in doing work that gives back and supports women. When I heard about doulas, I was immediately drawn to the profession and saw it as something I could do for the rest of my life. Because I am first and foremost a teacher, providing the information women and their families need to make informed choices about their pregnancies and births is something I am very passionate about and enjoy immensely. I am also a proponent of breastfeeding and know that this is the best way to nourish your infant whenever possible. As a postpartum doula, supporting the new mom is my main focus as well as educating the whole family on new ways of communicating and coping with caring for a newborn.
One tip I have for expecting moms and dads is to be informed about all of your choices so you can create the best chance of having the kind of birth you most want to experience. As a doula, I have the evidence based information that would be most valuable to you in your decision making process.
Your birth experience is something you will remember for the rest of your life so give yourself the best chance of having that experience be exceptional….give yourself the gift of a doula!
