Doula Profile for Kristi

Kristi

Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, Lactation Educator and Consultant

I moved from Texas to Denver in 1989 after graduating with a degree in Shakespearean literature. I found a job traveling across the country conducting seminars for a computer company. On a rare weekend home, I met my husband and we married in 1995.

We surfed through 4 years of infertility, through 5 doctors, 2 insurance companies, 3 jobs, a great deal of money and most of our sanity. After surgery and a high-risk pregnancy, we finally brought home our beautiful baby boy, Ethan, in 1999. Our amazing daughter, Emma, arrived with just as much drama in 2001.

I had started a Resolve infertility support group in 1996 from my home and from there became interested in pregnancy and birth. I began supporting my friends as they went from one pregnancy to another. I was mortified to discover how little we all knew about reproduction, women’s health, childbirth and postpartum! I decided to become a certified doula in 2001. I have been attending all types of birth from home to the hospital ever since. I started the Colorado Chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network in 2002, following my daughter’s birth. We host a support group for women that have had unexpected or trauma surgical deliveries. I am also currently teaching Lactation and Childbirth classes privately, as well as at two Denver hospitals.

Women are so strong! They never cease to amaze me. I truly love working through all the details and the issues of pregnancy and birth. Due to the nature of my deliveries, I have a unique understanding of how medicalized our society is and I know how to negotiate that area. I enjoy helping other women obtain their goals and dreams of motherhood, however that path may revel itself. I believe in the power of the mind and body and I understand how fear affects it. I believe in easy, natural births and I understand why sometimes babies need to come out a different way. I believe in informed consent and insuring that everyone understands everything that is happening and why. I believe in the babymoon and taking time off to get to know the new, little person that is in your life. I believe in breastfeeding and all the benefits. I believe in parenting and the wonder of watching a person grow in front of your eyes.

I believe that everyone deserves support, encouragement and love.

“To the world you may be just one person; but to just one person, you may be the world!”
